Poppy welcomed the Prime Minister's speech to this week's NFU Conference setting out how the Conservatives are backing British farmers, sticking to our plan to support rural communities.
The Prime Minister announced £2.4bn investment in the sector every year, making sure farmers get a fair price for their produce and our food security is protected. The support package includes:
- £220m of grants to help farms invest in new technology and equipment, robotics, rooftop solar, and slurry storage, to increase profitability and resilience
- Increasing our monitoring of food security, supported by a UK-wide annual Food Security Index
- Reviewing food supply chains so farmers get paid fairly for their produce
- Rolling out new schemes to reward sustainable farming practices, including doubling the Management Payment to up to £2,000, to cover admin fees for those who sign up this year
In response to the announcement, Poppy said: "South Norfolk's hard-working farmers are crucial to our rural economy and produce some of the best food in the world. The Labour Party's green promises jeopardise 40,000 farming jobs. I'm glad the Conservatives recognise the vital importance of the sector and have a plan to support our farmers."
